After a successful tour of the U.S. in 2010, Dis-patch, the leading cutting-edge music and related art festival presents its 9th edition to be held in different locations around Belgrade from 7 to 17 October under the tagline ROCKET NUMBER 9. As in its previous incarnations, the festival that spans two extended weekends will feature a residence programme, a series of exciting concerts, including the world premiere of a new Dis-patch production, audio-visual performances, workshops, discussions with artists and special open-air events.
After the drummer Martyn Brabdlmayr and video artist Lillevan Pobjoy, the third artist in residence at the festival is the well-known Barcelona-based artist Boris Hoppek whose work focuses mostly on simple, easily recognizable shapes featured on monumental cardboard sculptures, paintings, collages, objects or in actions. His work met with commercial success, however, in Belgrade, Hoppek will be building a big cardboard structure exploring the notion of church and its meanings and non-meanings in the western culture and holding several workshops intended for children and university students of art.
The first part of the Dis-patch music line-up promises a wide range of approaches - from historical avant-garde, noise-rock, dance and raw electronic music to melodious post-rock, mechanical orchestras or abstract ambient. The festival will kick off with a special premiere of Mantra at the Kolarac music hall. Mantra is a piece written by the German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen performed by Belgrade's Piano Duo LP. It is one of Stockhausen's more demanding compositions for two pianos and a modulator written in 1970 and performed very rarely. Dis-patch started working on this concert as early as the beginning of this year. The theatre director, Nikola Zavišić is in charge of lighting design. The first guest performance has already been booked for the Zagreb Music Biennale in April 2010.
The familiar electronic component of the programme will be headed by Atom TM (a.k.a. Senor Coconut) who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut. He will sit for a public interview to mark the occasion. Atom TM's impressive audio-visual performance is part of the programme exchange between Dis-patch and the Elevate festival that will play host to the European leg of the ViceVerse tour just two weeks later. Shifting towards rock, the French kraut-groove duo Zombie Zombie will be promoting their new album entirely based on the songs by John Carpenter released just a month before this concert.
The festival will also showcase digital murals and open-air actions and more local authors, an exhibition of photographs and a special edition of the Yardstyle party series along with an evening dedicated to the Australian label Room40 that celebrates its 10th anniversary and brings its prime artists, Lawrence English, Tim Hecker and Ben Frost to Belgrade.
The festival announces a special accommodation and ticket offer for international visitors. The reservations for full festival passes at special prices have been available since early September when the new Dis-patch site was launched. Even before the launch, programme-related news was posted on the Last.fm portal, Twitter and Facebook.
This year's festival will be held at several venues around the city: Kolarac Foundation, the museum "May 25th", Gun Club, Belgrade City Library, Radio Belgrade, ITS-Z1 Ritopek and Cultural Centre REX.
